EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

GETTING STARTED
-
Bouldering is a type of climbing that’s easy to start if you have not climbed before - it is rock climbing stripped down to its pure essentials. You can jump right in, no hassle with ropes or required courses. The walls are up to fifteen feet high and outfitted with thick cushy pads below to keep you safe. Your challenge is to climb short but tricky bouldering "problems" (a route, or sequence of moves) using balance, technique, strength, and your brain (“problem solving").
The climbs are high enough to be exciting and challenging, but not so high that they become overly intimidating. Falling is perfectly OK and expected - that is what the thick pads are built for. With bouldering, it is just you, the wall, and your homies.
-
Absolutely. Every experienced climber started exactly where you are. You don't need any experience, strength, or special gear. Just wear something comfortable and show up. We'll get you set up with rental shoes and chalk and walk you through everything when you arrive.
-
No. Day passes are $25 and give you full access to the gym for the day. If you want to try a few times before committing, our Starter Pack gives you 3 day passes plus shoe rental and chalk for $70. Memberships are available when you're ready, but there's no pressure.
-
Wear athletic clothes you can move in freely. Think gym clothes, not jeans, because you need your hips and legs to move on the wall. Trim your nails if you can. The only gear you need is climbing shoes and chalk, and we rent both at the front desk. Bring a water bottle and you're set.

Our climbing gym is located at 325 Stockbridge Rd, Great Barrington Massachusetts, 02130. The gym is the rear building in the complex, facing the river. Driving directions can be found here.

Berkshire Boulders features approximately 2,000 square feet of bouldering walls designed for all abilities, a 12x12 foot lit-up adjustable spray wall that tilts from 0 to 60 degrees, a fitness area with free weights, squat rack, hangboards, cardio equipment, and floor mats, a retail storefront with climbing supplies, snacks, drinks, and gear, a hangout and co-working space, and an outdoor area.

Yes. We're a dedicated bouldering gym, which means no ropes, no harnesses, and no belay certifications needed. Our walls are designed for every level, from your first day to your hardest project. The adjustable spray wall lets you set your own climbs or try problems set by others, and it tilts from vertical to 60 degrees overhanging.

Yes. Berkshire Boulders is for all ages. That being said, supervision is required. We require a 2:1 youth-to-adult ratio for climbers under 14, and a parent or guardian must maintain direct supervision during the entire visit. We recommend kids be at least 4 years old to start bouldering.

OUTDOORS
-
Great Barrington and neighboring areas in the Berkshires are home to incredible climbing. Unfortunately, the majority of the climbing is not available to the public. Organizations such as the Western Massachusetts Climbers Coalition (WMCC) have been working hard to secure access so that these areas can remain in the public domain for future generations of climbers. The area known as the Reservoir is the crown jewel of bouldering in the Berkshires. Bouldering at the Reservoir is varied, extensive, and quite excellent. The Gneiss rock lends itself to technical and aesthetic climbing. The well known classics of the area include Roses and Blue Jays (V13), Something From Nothing (v11), Fatwa (v10), The Bump (V8), Big Big Love (V8), Fen Fen (V7), Green Goddess (V7), French Tips (V6), Spack (V4), and Scary Mantelo (V3), amongst many, many others. To learn more about this area, please become a member of WMCC here.
There are many other areas in Great Barrington and beyond to sport climb or boulder at. However these areas need protecting. Profits from Berkshire Boulders gets donated to protect outdoor climbing. Please consider supporting the Western Massachusetts Climber’s Coalition whose work makes rock climbing in Western Massachusetts possible.
